Okay ladies, today I'm talking to you. Now, first, a disclaimer. I'm not about changing anyone. If you're looking for ideas or advice on how to change your geek, you can move on now. I'm all about loving someone as they are, not as you want them to be.

Still here? Good. Now we're going to learn how to approach your geek of choice. But first, what exactly is a "Geek"?

Currently, a geek can be classified as any person whose core interests are not what most would consider mainstream. Geeks also have a tendency to go all in, in that they dive deep into their chosen interest. They tend to spend a lot of time finding out all of the little esoteric facts and details that a casual fan might not take the time to learn about.

This doesn't mean however, that you have to spend a ton of time studying up on your geek's area of interest. One thing most people enjoy is sharing their interest with other people - this is why conventions or "cons" are so popular. I would suggest that you have a broad overview of his or her favorite passion, but let your Geek fill you in on the details. Although, if you can come up with a random fact that not many people know, you can really impress your geek by knowing it.

Just be careful that you actually understand what is significant about the fact. If you mention that Ghadfort is actually a Virgo, without actually knowing why that matters, you might end up looking silly or like you're trying too hard.

A word to the wise though, there are some fans who take things to the next level. To those people, just knowing who Pinkie Pie is, doesn't make you a fan, you need to know every tiny little detail about every single character on the show, and if you don't, they can get pretty strident about how you're not a "real" fan if you don't know about Rainbow Twinkles mane disaster of 2014 or whatever.

If you encounter this kind of behavior, I would personally move on and not get any further involved with that person. Unless they have some serious redeeming qualities aside from fan-blasting anyone who doesn't know as much as they do. And even so, I'd be sure to make them aware that that kind of behavior is not acceptable to you.

There are many areas of interest that can be considered geeky. Your geek might be into comics, MMORPGs like World of Warcraft, video games in general, anime, Star Trek, Star Wars, Minecraft, tabletop gaming, role playing, LARPing, or any combination. And this just scratches the surface.

So, you've set your sights on a geek, now you want to get to know them better. The first thing you're going to want to do is figure out what you have in common with them, and then what their favorite flavor of fandom is. Are they a Whovian? A Trekkie? This will all factor into how you approach them. And make no mistake, you're probably going to have to approach them. Geeks in general are not known for being outgoing or overly confident. It's very likely that you're going to have to make the first move.

If you are friends with a geek and you want to step it up to the next level, that is the easiest "in" you can have. They're already comfortable with you, and they might even be harboring a crush on you as well. You'll just have to make your interest very clear. In fact, invite them out for something low key, just the two of you. Is there an event at a local game shop they might enjoy? Or just go for coffee or lunch or something. Geeks eat too!

You're going to have to be very frank about the fact that you're into him or her, but don't be too aggressive about it. The more low key and laid back about it you can be, the better. You don't want to scare them off, and in my experience, geeks tend to be more easily scared off than non-geeks.

Keep it frank, keep it low key, and hopefully, you'll get the response you're looking for!!

Minecraft 102

Now that I've given you a bit of an overview of the mobs of Minecraft, I thought I'd do the same for the critters. Critters are different in that they spawn (or appear) during the daytime, and they drop things that are useful to eat or to craft with.

Bats: These are passive beasts that spawn in large enclosed spaces like caves or caverns underground.

Chicken: Chickens appear in grassy fields. They will sometimes lay an egg, which you can gather and use for cooking. If you kill them, you get a raw chicken and feathers. You can cook the chicken and eat it.

Cow: Cows are passive. They drop leather when killed. If you have a bucket, you can use it to milk the cow and get milk, which is used in cooking.

Horse: Horses can be tamed and ridden. They do not drop anything useful if you kill them.

Pig: Pigs spawn in well lit areas. They drop raw pork chops if you kill them, which must be cooked before you eat it.

Sheep: Sheep are passive mobs that provide wool if you use shears on them. They naturally spawn with black, white, brown, light grey or grey wool but you can dye them before you shear them to get colored wool.

Squid: Squid spawn in water. They don't attack unless you attack them first. If you kill them, they drop ink sacs.

Villager: Villagers are non-player-characters, or NPCs that live in villages. They have different professions and will trade goods for emeralds.

Wolf: Wolves are passive towards players but will attack sheep. You can tame them with a bone, and then they will have a red collar on and will protect you. If you have a tame wolf and you are attacked, the wolf will defend you against whatever is attacking you.

Minecraft 101

In the interest of helping you relate to your geek, or geek-in-training, here is a quick primer on Minecraft!

Minecraft is a sandbox type world building game, rendered in 8 bit blocks, reminiscent of old 1980's era video games. What does this mean in plain speak? The graphics are blocky and simple. A sandbox game is basically a game where there's no story or plotline. You are dropped into a world and you can do whatever you want there. There are two main ways to play the game; adventure mode or creative (building) mode.

In Adventure mode, the monsters you see can hurt you and even kill you. You start out with nothing and have to use your hands to dig or cut down a tree to make weapons and tools. You have to gather the materials to build everything and you want to have a safe place to be during the nighttime when the monsters roam.

In creative mode, the monsters won't actually hurt you and your inventory is filled with unlimited resources. You have an infinite amount of every building material, tool, weapon and armor type. If you or your geek is going to be creating a masterpiece, this is the most common way to play because you can simply focus on building. You don't have to worry about gathering materials or defending yourself from monsters.

There are many different monsters (called Mobs to those in the know) in Minecraft, but I'm only going to give you an overview of the most common. These are only dangerous in Adventure mode and they only come out at night.

Creepers - These are the worst thing possible for anyone building. They start hissing when you get close to them, and then they blow up - and they blow up whatever they're near, so if they get in your cool structure and blow up, you can kiss it goodbye. When they blow up, they disintegrate some of the resources used to build your structure, so you'll need to actually collect more to complete your repairs. When you kill one before it blows up, you get gunpowder.

Zombies -  Slow and moaning, zombies are mindless. They come towards you and bump into you, but they're easily avoided or outran. They don't explode or do anything nasty but they can kill you if you're not careful. They drop poisoned meat when they die.

Spiders - These are a hassle because they can poison you, dealing damage over time. They don't harm your structures though. Spiders give you thread when they die.

Skeletons - These mobs are irritating because they carry bows and will attack you from far away. They jump around and are somewhat difficult to hit. They drop bones when they are killed, and sometimes arrows or bows.

Endermen - These mobs don't harm you if you leave them alone, but they are agents of chaos and will move blocks around randomly. If you notice a chunk missing from your building, you can bet an Enderman was there. If you attack them, they will teleport away from you, making them difficult to kill.

In the next installment, we'll talk about the other, non-agressive mobs in the game.

Geek fatigue

Sometimes geeks can be hard to talk to. The simplest question can lead to a full on lecture that feels like it will never end on the benefits of a Charizard vs a Lickilicky or what it took to build the latest and greatest structure in Minecraft. Luckily, geeks are easily distracted...ooh, shiny! And with a little bit of foreknowledge, you can help guide the conversation into different directions.

If you have a loved one who is really into Minecraft, take a few minutes and pull up a wiki article on it. Just google Minecraft and see what comes up. Knowledge is power and with a little research, not only will the conversation make more sense to you, but you'll be able to impress your partner by asking intelligent questions. Geeks love to feel like they're experts on something, and if they feel like you've been listening, they'll feel less of the need to give you a ton of backstory as to WHY they did something a certain way or HOW it was done.

Who knows, you might have your interest piqued enough to actually check it out for yourself! You might become the latest convert! At the very least, you'll be able to guide the conversation a little bit so it's less of a lecture and a chore.
